DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK'S MEETING: HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
We had a special guest, Arthur Cone's daughter, Coreyanna, who attended both the meeting and the community service committee meeting. She was shadowing Arthur for 'Take Your Daughter to Work Day"
Joe Wismann-Horther, Integration Partnerships Coordinator for the Colorado Refugee Services Program discussed the US and state refugee program. The Federal Government screens and sets the amount of refugees that will be allowed legally into the country. The past few years has seen 70,000 refugees come to America. That number is estimated to rise to 75,000 from across the globe for 2016. Colorado traditionally takes two percent of the Nation’s refugees.
A new sign up sheet went around - for weekly invocation presenters. This way everyone gets a chance, even if you're not an accomplished public speaker! Your name will also appear in the Wheel, under upcoming speakers.
OTHER NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT
CLUB MEMBERS HONORED AT NCOA BANQUET
Congrats to our NCOA honorees!
Jerry is officially in the Rat Pack!
Sunday afternoon found the Selinfreunds, the Keytons & the Sparks down in Colorado Springs at the annual NCOA awards banquet held at the Retired Enlisted Association headquarters. They were there to receive awards for the volunteer hours they've racked up. And another feather in Jerry's cap, he was inducted into the International Rat Pack. No, he's not joining Frank, Dean, Sammie, Peter and Joey (tho I know he'd love that!). To an NCOA member, it is the first step in a long line of accredited accomplishments. The awards program of the NCOA is one of the most important ongoing programs contributing directly to the growth and success of the NCOA. It ensures members who are active in Association affairs are properly recognized. CONGRATS TO ALL!
SPRING FRIENDSHIP DINNERS COMING UP!
Still a few more spaces available at the May Friendship Dinners. Sign up sheets will be passed at next week's meeting

RYLA PARTICIPANTS SELECTED
By Jan Keyton
The online applications are completed as well as the interviews for RYLA 2016! Currently we are sending 6 students: one each from Rock Canyon, Mtn Vista, Thunder Ridge & Highlands Ranch HS, as well as 2 from Aurora Central HS through Boys Hope/Girls Hope. Also, we have 5 students going to YoungRYLA; 2 from Mtn Ridge MS, 1 from Cresthill MS and 1 from West MS. We will be adding one more student this week for the fifth slot.
All the students are very excited to be chosen, paperwork has yet to be completed for the YoungRYLA students, and all these students will be presented after their camps to our Club as speakers at one program in early August. Thanks to all Rotarians who support our annual Peach/Pear Sale which funds these students to experience leadership camp.
SUE FOX IS REMEMBERED BY HER CLUB
It is with a great deal of sadness I tell you that Sue Fox passed away peacefully late last night after a year-long courageous battle with cancer. She was 69 years old.
I had the pleasure and honor of serving with Sue when she was our Club President in 2008-09. Her Goal #1 was "To have more fun than we've ever had before!" We started the year with a Dual Celebration with Highlands Ranch Rotary as her husband Bob Martin also was beginning his term as their Club President. Despite the economic challenges that year, we prevailed thanks to Sue's tireless efforts and her optimistic and positive attitude. She never missed an opportunity to tell our many deserving volunteers "way to go!". And we had a good time too.
Sue was a Rotarian for over 18 years, having joined our Club 15 years ago when she moved her law practice to central Denver. Just like in Rotary, she was highly respected in her field of real estate law. She epitomized what it means to be a Rotarian and the impact she had on others, our Club and the world was far reaching and powerful.
Along with serving as our World Community Services Committee Chair, she championed many international projects. The Committee honored her with their "Greatest Impact" and "Continuing Service" Awards. Together with Bob, they opened their home to our Club's Youth Exchange student, and she was a devoted mentor to our High School Scholarship students for over 11 years. As a Past President, she shared her love of Rotary with our new members through the "Your Rotary Friend" committee. A generous supporter of both Foundations, Sue was a Paul Harris Fellow +2, a DRCF Silver Fellow and a Legacy Society Charter member. She was honored as our Club's Rotarian of the Year in 2015.
Just last week, our Rotary District 5450 also named Sue as their 2016 Rotarian of the Year in recognition of her service to Rotary and for her endless efforts as the founder and chair of the District 5450 Rotary Peace Corps Alliance Committee. To quote Grant Wilkins, "Sue is the reason that Rotary and Peace Corps were able to work out a cooperative agreement, which will benefit both organizations and their volunteers, members, and alumni, from countries all over the world - forever.” Sue has deservedly been nominated for the Peace Corps' prestigious John F. Kennedy Service Award.
Please keep Bob and her loving family in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time. Notes of condolences can be sent to 1011 South Valentia Street, #99, Denver, CO 80247. Services are pending.
Sue was a beautiful woman both inside and out. I like many of you am heartbroken. While she will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts, what a wonderfully rich legacy she leaves behind.
Yours in Rotary,
Darlene Mast
Executive Director THE ROTARY CLUB OF DENVER
AND THE DC KUDOS JUST KEEP COMING!
Our club outdid itself with the 2016 District Conference. Here is what some attendees had to say via email to Mary Kay:
Thank you for the wonderful conference. I do not think I have attended another with a better program of speakers. They were excellent and such a reason to celebrate our District. You have done a marvelous job this year on a short timeline with many things not under your control. My hat is off to you! Not many could do this great a job! So thanks also for accepting the challenge. You are GREAT. Enjoy your plans and the rest of your visits. Sincerely, Mary Jean Ewing
My band and I appreciate everything so much. Thanks for being so sweet to work with and so gracious an audience. I love my job!!! Love and hugs. Lannie (Garrett)
Ruthe and I want to offer a most positive thank you for a most upbeat district conference. The venue was one of the best and the hotel staff was on top of it during the sessions I was associated with. I always look for plenty of room and a casual atmosphere in the “House of Friendship” and there was. PDG Russell D Gleason
I wanted to thank you again for the opportunity to speak at your event. I was so impressed by everyone, none more than you. The effort to make that event happen is monumental and I applaud you and your volunteers for putting on such a classy event. Thanks again, Todd Musselman
MARY KAY LEARNS THE MACHARENA!
Always a good sport, MK shimmied - on stage, in front of the entire conference - with our Brazilian exchange students who taught her to dance like she's at Carnival in Rio!
Please join the Highlands Ranch Rotary Sunrise Club for our regular meetings. The meetings are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 8:30 am at the south campus of Childrens Hospital at 1811 Plaza Dr. Highlands Ranch. We offer a delicious continental breakfast ($7.00 for members and guests). We also have wonderful speakers you will enjoy. This is a great opportunity for a make up meeting or for potential members that cannot attend noon meetings. If you plan to attend, please notify Ann Mather (Annmather@aol.com) or Paul Campbell (Paulcamp64@gmail.com) a day in advance. We look forward to seeing you!!!
