DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK'S MEETING? HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
GALA 2017 - AND WE'RE OFF!
By Jerry Selinfreund
The 2017 Gala launched at last week's meeting. Debby Doig reported on the many service projects both locally and internationally that the Gala supports. Jerry Selinfreund went over this years sponsor categories and asked for support. It was a big success.
All of last year's major sponsors ($1,000-5,000) were contacted by Jerry prior to the meeting and all have either agreed to contribute the same amount as they gave last year or increase their contribution. The 10 major sponsors committed $34,500. Another 25 sponsors stepped forward at the meeting and contributed $13,200. The current total sponsorship is $47,700!
We a good chance of passing last year's record for sponsorship which was $61,600. A banner was displayed saying "IT ALL STARTS HERE" and 35 Rotarians stepped forward and answered the call.

30TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOMEN IN ROTARY EVENT
The Golden Rotary Club held it's 30th Anniversary of Women in Rotary event on Saturday. Dr. Sylvia Whitlock, the first woman club president in Rotary, was honored.
In the 1970s, the Rotary Club of Duarte, CA needed more members. They sought community leaders and invited their local elementary school principal, Dr. Whitlock. Because RI did not yet allow women to be Rotarians, the club president stepped around the first of the Four-Way Tests, because inviting women to be members more than met the next three tests.
Unfortunately, RI didn't agree. On March 27, 1978, the Rotary International Board of Directors officially revoked the charter of the Duarte club after the appeals process was concluded. Duarte did not take RI's 'no' sitting down. They became the Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte. It wasn't until May 4, 1987 when the US Supreme Court ruled that women could become members that Duarte became a real Rotary Club again. Ironically, Sandra Day O'Conner, the first woman Supreme Court Justice, had to recuse herself from the case because her husband was a Rotarian.
So it was that in 1987, Dr. Whitlock became the president of the Duarte Rotary Club AND the first woman president of a Rotary Club in the world.
Former 5450 District Governors: Talee Crowe,1999-2000, from Smoky Hill, Diane Kessel Knight, 2004-5, from Golden, Karen Sekick, 2010-11, from Longmont & Mary Kay Hasz, 2015-16 from HR, sat on a panel with Dr. Whitlock at the event

Rotaraction is a new type of Rotary Club - an online club for 18 to 30-year-olds. The structure of Rotaraction differs significantly from Rotaract. First, its entirely online; second, the primary communication tool is a smart phone app. Third, all Rotaraction members will be full Rotarians.
Rotaract Clubs will not be impacted as their value proposition is quite different and still valid. Rotaract is geographically bound just as Rotary Clubs are. Rotaraction, by being online, will not have geographic boundaries.
Rotaraction was formed to fill a need - a way to get/keep young people involved in Rotary, especially since Rotary currently has a limited value proposition for this demographic. In addition to the online meetings we will be providing members with access to the projects and activities of other Rotary, Interact and Rotaract clubs along the Front Range so they can choose to participate based upon type of activity and their availability. We will include local contact information the Rotaraction member has a contact and can ask to participate.
Research has shown this demographic has very little desire to spend time in meetings, they want to communicate quickly, easily and at their own convenience. They much prefer to engage in service projects. Many are in college and even if there is a Rotaract club, attending meetings can be too time consuming.
In addition to the time issue, belonging to most traditional Rotary Clubs is cost prohibitive. Our college members face many costs and often have little opportunity to earn money. Our dues for college members are just enough to cover District and RI dues and to pay for the cost of hosting the app. We are setting the dues at $45 per quarter. For most of us this is not a significant amount, however, to a college student it can make the difference between joining or not.
All Rotaraction members will be official members of the Highlands Ranch Rotary. I ask that you give our new Rotaraction Club your support and make any member that visits our club welcome.

So mentors, please call your mentees and get them going. The process should take just under 2 months. And we want the red badges ready for the next round of new members!
