THIS WEEK January 14, 2016
Bob Pasicznyuk, Director Douglas County Libraries
WE SAY GOOD BYE TO OUR PRESIDENT
We had great attendance at our first meeting of the year – it’s almost like members couldn’t wait to get back into the swing of things. But a little announcement at the end of the meeting silenced the room. Tom Havens, our illustrious president, announced that he’s being transferred by his company and will be stepping down. He has served Highlands Ranch Rotary well this year, leading the club in a professional manner, standing side-by-side with Mary Kay in her duties as district governor and serving us all well. So send Tom a bittersweet note – congrats on his new position, but sincere sadness upon his departure. No worries, we haven’t seen the last of Tom, as he will rejoin the club when he’s back in the area, as he plans to retire here.
Our own dynamo, Jan Selinfreund, president elect, is up to a lengthy presidency and has agreed to step in to fill the void of Tom’s departure. She’ll take the reins on Feb. 1. Jan was quick to say she’d need all the help she could get. Being such a hands-on club, there is no doubt that she’ll have people at her side to help in any way.
WHEEL SPINNER NEWS
New year, new changes to the “Wheel”. Fred Erb has served as our newsletter editor for almost 5 years. In that time, he has written the weekly publication, attended events to take pics and write stories as well as his other duties. But all things must come to an end and Fred wants to move on to other duties within the club.
Hop in, Sue Bramley! Sue has agreed to become the new editor, a highly sought after position, within the club! As she explained at Thursday’s meeting, she can’t attend every meeting, so is putting together a gaggle of reporters to do quick write-ups of meeting happenings as well as photos. Many thanks to Li Liu, Michelle McRae and Marion Trummer for getting in on the ground floor of this great opportunity! We’ll all appreciate seeing their inner journalist develop. By-lines and photo credits will be given to all articles submitted. And, don’t worry if you didn’t sign up, Sue will be calling you to fill in on occasion!
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBER!
We had a great opportunity to meet our newest member, Maren Erickson, during her classification talk Thursday. We found out so much about her. Things that resonated with the Bramleys were that she played women’s rugby at Luther College (where she was a huge legacy, what with parents and many relatives attending in the past), served on the board of The Sons of Norway, has been an athlete all her life and has passed that love down to her 2 daughters. Hailing from Minnesota (big surprise with her name!), she has lived in Iowa, Wyoming and now Colorado where she works as a family counselor for Olinger Mortuary. Her vibrancy and enthusiasm were contagious and I so see her as a “Wheel Spinner” reporter!

Zack Begley:
WE WATCHED HIM GROW UP!
The membership was treated to a special performance by Zack Begley on Thursday, 1/8. A piano/voice presentation where he performed "Waves" by The Deer Hunter, "The Messenger" by Linkin Park, and "Mary Lou" by Sonata Artica.
To those of you new to the club, Zack was our scholarship winner 4 years ago. His mom, Cindy, attended his talk when he applied, then again when he won. Those two meetings proved fortuitous for both his mom and for our club, as Cindy decided then and there to join Highlands Ranch Rotary. Now she's next in line for the club's presidency!
The other benefit to the club is that we've watched Zack grow from a teen to a man and seen his talents develop significantly. In a small way, we can share in his success! He'll graduate this year from University of Colorado and will pursue a career in music & singing.

GET YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS IN!
RI is now collecting data on the number of volunteer hours each club logs. Charles Tutor is collecting them for our club. Please get yours to him this week at: chastutor@hotmail.com.

Please join the Highlands Ranch Rotary Sunrise Club for our regular meetings. The meetings are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 8:30am at the south campus of Childrens Hospital at 1811 Plaza Dr. Highlands Ranch. We offer a delicious continental breakfast ($7.00 for members and guests). We also have wonderful speakers you will enjoy. This is a great opportunity for a make up meeting or for potential members that cannot attend noon meetings. If you plan to attend, please notify Ann Mather (Annmather@aol.com) or Paul Campbell (Paulcamp64@gmail.com) a day in advance. We look forward to seeing you!!!
