OTHER NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT
DISTRICT CONFERENCE IN PICTURES!
Thanks to Li Liu, Jan Selinfreund, Connie Golas, Tom Keyton and Michelle McRae for the great photos!
Great times, great friends, great presentations and great setting - this is what success looks like!
Led by our own Mary Kay Hasz, District Governor. She said "I was proud to represent our club and to see so many present and willing to lend a hand. We have received many compliments. Some from other clubs said "Best ever".
Sue Fox was honored as Rotarian of the Year - district 5450. A Rotarian for over 20 years, she's known for her work joining Rotary with the Peace Corps (our recent Costa Rica outreach benefiting from that relationship). A cool factoid - Sue was president of Denver Rotary the same year as her husband, Bob Martin, was president of our club!
And our club presence at the conference was full of Rotary glitterati: District Governor Mary Kay, club president Jan Selinfreund, Wheel Spinner photog Li Liu, president elect Cindy Begley (her head in the foreground!), District Conference planner Ray Anderson and District vocational training team manager John Logan
Lannie Garrett entertained the crowd with her performance titled 'Swing Sets: Bennie, Basie and Beyond'
Hum, could this be happy hour in progress?
It seems past president Steve Miller incited the Area 8 sing along. After showing everyone how to use a phone app with a lit lighter and as he was 'swaying to the music', not only our table, but the whole room joined in!
The exhibits were well attended by our club! You'll see a ShelterBox tent in the background (see story on ShelterBox in last week's issue of the Wheel)
Connie Golas, Marion Trummer & Michelle McRae entertained our club's exchange students Bruna Schmidlin & Larissa Alves, both from Brazil at the 5th Ave. Grill in Frisco
Reen Gottern did a fabulous job on our club's table top booth. Look at all the photos!
Marion & Gail did a great job with registration. Such a great way to meet new people

ARCH KLUMPH HAD AN IDEA – HOW GOOD WAS IT?
Jan Keyton wanted to share this article from the March edition of ROTARIAN. The author, Ray Klinginsmith was the President of RI in 2010 and now is a Foundation Trustee Chair. With the Rotary Annual Convention in Atlanta in 2017, Ray thinks it’s time to revisit Klumph’s idea at the 100 year anniversary.
When Arch Klumph was president of Rotary in 1916-17, he suggested in a speech at the 1917 Atlanta convention that Rotary should start an endowment fund for the purpose of doing good in the world. It was only a brief reference, but the idea caught on with Rotarians. The Rotary Club of Kansas City, MO made the first donation of $26.50 to the new fund, which was officially named The Rotary Foundation in 1928.
The rotary Foundation had some activity in the 1930s &1940s, but it was the memorial gifts to honor Paul Harris after his death in January 1947 that provided the funds to undertake the first major program. That was the award of 18 International scholarships for successful college graduates to spend a year studying abroad as Rotary Fellows. The fellowship program grew to 125 students a year in 1960-61, when I was a Rotary Fellow in Cape Town, SA. And it later became the largest privately funded scholarship program with 1200 students a year.
Rotarians’ constant search for the best possible charitable programs led to the introduction of the Matching Grants and Group Study Exchange programs in 1965-66. From there, the Foundation assumed responsibility for the Polio Plus program in the early 1980s, established the Rotary Peace Centers in 2002. And restructured Rotary’s Humanitarian Grants Program as a part of the Future Vision plan in 2013.
What has been the result of these efforts? Rotarians have been justifiably proud and supportive of the Foundation for many years, evidenced by their generous contributions of $123 million to the Annual Fund in 2014-15. In addition, CNBC television network recently confirmed the success of The Rotary Foundation by naming it one of the “top 10 charities changing the world in 2015.” In fact, our Foundation was ranked as the fifth-best charity working to make the world a better place!
What a powerful tribute to Arch Klumph’s visionary idea in 1917! We have so much to be proud of in Rotary, including the Rotary Foundation, and so much to celebrate at the Atlanta convention next year. Please plan now to attend the centenary celebration at the convention and show your support for one of the very best charitable foundations in the world!
