DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK'S MEETING?  HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED

SHELTERBOX PRESENTATION

David Adder is the ShelterBox Ambassador from Denver.  He gave members a great overview of the ShelterBox project, which was conceived and started by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall, England.  This small club has had a huge impact on families impacted by natural disasters and humanitarian crises around the world.  In April 2000, their 47 members adopted ShelterBox as its millennium project. Little did they know that it would become the largest Rotary club project in the world, with affiliates in countries across the globe.

OTHER NEWS THAT'S FIT TO PRINT

DON'T FORGET - MELLOW MUSHROOM MEETING NOV. 3!

The meeting will be held at the Mellow Mushroom at 6271 Park Meadows Drive from 11:30 to 1:30PM on Thursday, Nov. 3rd. We have exclusive use of the patio area.

HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT - ONE OF OUR CLUB'S DEAREST PROJECTS
In 2015, Joe Roos founded Hide in Plain Sight, a nonprofit that provides college scholarships to homeless Douglas County students with at least a 3.0 GPA and a desire to pursue post-secondary education. Three $3,000 scholarships were distributed the first year, five students received the awards the next year. And in 2017, they plan to fund at least 35 more students, thanks to a matching Workforce Development grant from the State of Colorado.  Eight of these 35 have already been awarded this past October.

Joe's epiphany happened when he found out that 100 percent of Douglas County's middle and high schools have homeless students.  "Homelessness is not a disease," says Roos. "It can be eradicated with our help."  And help, he did, when he put his extensive experience in the nonprofit world to work on these at-risk students. The group raises funds through fundraisers, donations and grants, and the state contributed a matching grant. Roos expects Hide in Plain Sight to expand its reach to Denver, Arapahoe, Adams and Jefferson counties.

HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT RECIPIENT OF THE GATSBY GLAM GALA
The Castle Rock Business Builders and Castle Pines Chamber of Commerce hosted the Gatsby Glam Gala Friday night where Hide in Plain Sight, started by our own Joe Roos, was the featured nonprofit.  It was the place to see and be seen at Cielo at Castle Pines event center.  With Joe as founder and executive director and Jerry Wilford as chairman of the board of directors, HR Rotary had a nice presence. Lee McCue also purchased a table and had a whole other group of friends and Keller Williams gang. About 225 people attended and the Roaring 20's costumes were fantastic! Attendees even got tickets to enter the speakeasy for bootleg whiskey and gambling!

It was a big evening for Hide in Plain Sight, as $65,000 was raised to help the young students.

Joe & Jerry lookin' like dapper dudes!

Jerry outbid others at least half a dozen times to win the Von Miller signed swag, only to lose at the last minute!
Cindy & Mike Begley dressed the part

The power trio of the night - Betsy Alexander, District Treasurer, Connie Golas, who spent the evening as a blackjack ace, and Goldie Wilford, who urged on husband Jerry to bid higher and higher!
Bill & Cyndi Medlicott got in touch with their inner flapper!
Jan Keyton was teaching Tom how to play blackjack
The Simmermons and the Bramleys enjoyed a plethora of chocolate
Elizabeth Kringel and Debby Doig were in attendance.  Check out Elizabeth's gorgeous headband. In the day, it was called a 'brain binder' or a 'headache band'. These days it's a much better fit!
