DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK’S MEETING?  HERE’S WHAT HAPPENED:

WARRIOR BONFIRE PROGRAM - EXPLAINED

Mike Foss, president, discussed the Warrior Bonfire Program, which is committed to providing programs that improve the lives of Purple Heart recipients on their life long journey of recovery and healing.  Their focus is on creating activity based, stress free environments that promote camaraderie and therapeutic healing. The three main areas are veterans, veteran spouses, and networks for alumni to be provided continued support. They take soldiers and spouses on trips that encourage healing by providing low stress environments and activities that build a brotherhood among our small groups.

PAUL HARRIS AND OTHER AWARD PHOTOS
As part of our new format, we'll be featuring a photo spread at the first of each month.  The photos will be of our Paul Harris Fellows from the month before as well as any award presentations.  Watch for it in early March!

50/50 winner was Charles Tutor

ANOTHER FUN EVENT FROM THE SOCIAL TEAM:

RIVERDANCE!

Steve & Janet Miller getting their Riverdance on!

But these are the dancers you'll actually see at the Riverdance Performance!

Don't miss this highly entertaining night at the Buell Theatre, Saturday night, March 12, to see a performance of Riverdance.  The international Irish dance phenomenon is back by popular demand in Riverdance - The 20th Anniversary World Tour. Drawing on Irish traditions, the combined talents of the performers propel Irish dancing and music into the present day in an exciting blend of dance, music and song.  What a great way to start your St. Patrick's Day festivities!

The show starts at 7:30 and tickets are discounted for us at $70/each.  The deadline to signup is February 25.  Checks should be made payable to the club.  THURSDAY IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER!

TO REGISTER, PASTE THIS LINK INTO YOUR BROWSER:  http://rotary5450.org/event/ac51e0e7-7103-4752-922c-1177bdfce62a/

The district conference, April 22-24 in Breckenridge, is going to be a crowning glory to Mary Kay's district governorship! The theme, Be a Gift to the World – Lead with Your Heart, provides many options for excellent sessions.

In addition to the educational events, there will be plenty of time to socialize and meet other district club members.  Saturday night you and your old and new friends will take in a performance by the fabulous Lannie Garrett, who we met at the 2015 Gala. Don't miss out on this enjoyable annual event!

3 CHEERS FOR OUR FRIENDSHIP DINNER HOSTS!
The winter friendship dinners are a thing of the past, as our final 2 concluded last Saturday.  Many, many thanks to Marion Trummer, Natasha Nola, Arthur Cone and Carolyn Bradish for hosting over 50 guests between them.

Now, for you new members -- these dinners are such a great way for you to meet and get to know club members.  The  dinners are open to all, so please register for the nest round if you missed these 4.

MOUNTAIN VISTA INTERACT IS AT IT AGAIN!
By MRMS Interact
In January, Mountain Vista Interact Club teamed up with Mountain Vista High School for a visit with our friends at Brookdale on January 30. We had a meeting on the 21st of January discussing the events of the Brookdale visit and brainstorming ideas for service projects for the remainder of the semester.  These include:  helping out with Mountain Vista Wish Week (where we raise money to grant a "wish kid" the wish of their dreams), making "newborn kits" for new moms and babies in need and the Denver Peanut Butter Plan to help feed people who may not have money for food). Thanks for all of your support!

OUR COSTA RICA TEAM IS ALIVE AND WELL!
Team leader Bill Simmermon sent a few photos of the gang getting acclimated as they begin their literacy adventure, along with Peace Corps volunteers.
Carl Dickerson, Renee Simmermon, Elizabeth Kringel and Bob Martin atop Poas Volcano in the fog

Our team with several Peace Corps Volunteers at a coffee producer's home.   Poncho, the owner, shared his life as a small independent producer of some of the best coffee in the world.  Of course, we had to sample!

Bill presenting club banner to President of Belen Rotary club. He hosted our club and Peace Corps volunteers at a members' home for a big BBQ party.  After we expressed support for their wheelchair project, they referred to us as "Angels" visiting from Colorado.  Many moist eyes in a touching Rotary moment.

MEMBER PROFILE:
WHO IS FRED ERB?

Fred was a westerner from the getgo

CAREER
Taught school in Springer, New Mexico and Dolores, Colorado.  Worked as manager with Furr’s Cafeterias in the Denver area for 4 years.  Served in the US Navy for 4 years, Nov. 68 – Nov. 72.  Boot Camp and “A” school in San Diego. Spent 25 months at AFSOUTH (NATO Headquarters) in Naples, Italy and 19 months on the USS Hancock CVA 19 with a 10 month cruise deployment to Viet Nam area. While in Naples, as a history major, I became the unofficial tour guide for all new people in my division. So I spent many days at Pompeii.

HOBBIES
Doing web sites for non-profit groups.  I did the web site for the Dolores Colorado Chamber of Commerce until last year and still doing the site for the Galloping Goose Historical Society (www.gallopinggoose5.com) in Dolores.  Latch hook rugs.

WHERE FROM/COLLEGE
I was born in Albuquerque New Mexico and after being adopted at 9 weeks old lived in Las Vegas New Mexico until I was drafted (but enlisted in the Navy). I graduated from NM Highlands University on a Saturday and received my draft notice the following Monday.   I received both my BA(68), in combined Social Studies and Secondary Ed, and my MA(74), in school Guidance and Counseling, from New Mexico Highlands University.

ROTARY PASSION
I have always believed in “Service above Self”.  I served as treasurer, secretary, and president (3 times) of the Dolores Rotary club.  I was also an AG in District 5470 for 3 years.  I have also been a member of Kiwanis, serving as club president in Springer New Mexico

FAVORITE VACATION SITE
What is a “vacation”?  But my dream vacation is to spend a week on the Amalfi coast.

SOMETHING COOL ABOUT YOU THAT NO ONE KNOWS!
When I was in the Navy, I signed up for a research project which sounded interesting (but few details), mainly because it was at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.  Project RIM (Restricted, Isolated, Monotony), was an in-depth study of the behavior of 2 man, and 3-man groups during a 21-day period of crowded, monotonous confinement. I was in a 2 man group in a room approx. 5 feet by 8 feet for the 21 days and nights.  The thing is I couldn’t remember the name of the person I was with 3 weeks later.  While there isn’t much info on the project, we were told at the time it was a study of how individuals would react on long space assignments. Keep in mind that this was 1969.
