DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK'S MEETING? HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
ROTARY READERS KICKS OFF WITH VISIT FROM ONE OF OUR TEACHERS!
|
Emmie Rooney is our contact at Sedalia Elementary. She discussed the huge need for people to read with their very transient student body. Because so many come from a home where the parent or parents work two jobs, they have no one to practice reading with and our group commitment is a godsend.
|
If Emmie's name sounds familiar to you, it's because she is Judy Rooney's daughter-in-law! Her 3 sons attended the meeting as well - and thank goodness for tablets, as they kept her kids, all students at Sedalia Elementary, busy! After hearing about the Rotary Reader program at Bear Canyon Elementary, she asked Judy if we could extend it to her school, which we promptly did and it has been a great match.

Many hands make for light work (not really, because the average weight for these babies was at least 15 pounds!). As you see, they filled up Jim's truck.

Thanks to the efforts of project coordinator Carolyn Bradish, Elizabeth Kringel, Iris Price, Sue & Jim Bramley, the 2016 Back to School backpack program is complete. Carolyn spent hours shopping around for the best price on school supplies to stuff in the backpacks that Jan Selinfreund was able to acquire, gratis, from her contact at Wal-Mart. This is such a worthwhile program. IFCS had over 500 students register for the program and were able to get every one of them sponsored.
Our club stepped up to the plate. Carolyn reported, "thanks to members in both the noon club and the morning club who donated 50 gift cards with total value of $1,200 to be used for back to school clothing. Half of the Walmart packs were donated to Douglas County Taskforce. Total given by foundation for supplies That I purchased was $1,000. Total donation value to IFCS for Pack to School Program is $2,500. Foundation will donate $1,000 to Douglas County TF for their request for school project. Total donation given to Douglas County for their back to school project will be $1,300."
This is what happens when everyone works to have a plan come together!
RYLA & YOUNG RYLA ARE IN FULL SWING
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is a life-changing leadership training program for young men and women where leadership skills and principles are learned, developed and enhanced in an atmosphere of trust and respect. The purpose of RYLA is to encourage and assist current and potential youth leaders in methods of responsible and effective leadership. Many past RYLArians have said, "It was the best week of my life!"
Rotary clubs in districts 5440 and 5450, throughout Northern Colorado, Wyoming, Eastern Idaho and Western Nebraska sponsor students to participate in these 5-day leadership conferences known as Rocky Mountain RYLA. The RYLA Conferences for 200 participants each are held at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado. These conferences are also referred to as Senior RYLA.
Then there is Young RYLA for 7th graders. This is an all-expenses paid five-day camp that brings together students from the same region as RYLA to share ideas about becoming better leaders. An action-packed program of activities that help build confidence and leadership skills (like problem solving games, challenge course, zip line, skits, group discussions and teambuilding activities). This camp is held in Larkspur.
Our dedicated counselors, Tom & Jan Keyton, Marion Trummer & Michelle McRae are currently up in Estes Park at camp. We'll be hearing from them and their students at next week's meeting.
YOUNG RYLA AD LIB SPEAKER AT LAST WEEK'S MEETING
Len Brasso from the Aurora Gateway club visited our club last week. He took a few minutes to talk about his 20+ years volunteering at RYLA and how he moved on to Young RYLA when it started. As he describes it, "there is a bit of a challenge spending a week's vacation with 7th graders!" He went on to talk about at the beginning, it was a one week camp with 120 kids and two years later, it's grown to 2 one-week camps, each with 120 students. What a great way to get kids started in a Rotary activity at such a young age.
Len is a 3 time District Governor. It is a pleasure to have him visit us!
AND SPEAKING OF CLIPBOARDS...
|
The clipboard sign up sheet is a valuable tool for many groups, not just our club. I think we got the idea from Star Trek! But wherever the idea came from, don't forget to sign up to be a GREETER so you're an active part of our new program.

With all the sign up sheets going around at club meetings, we're going to start recapping what we need to sign up for! Clipboard passers - let me know what you have coming up so I can include it. You can check here for what's coming up!
1. Tim Sparks is looking for someone to do the weekly inspiration.
2. Judy Rooney & Iris Price need people to sign up for Rotary Readers.
3. Bob Walsh needs greeters.
4. Steve Miller says tickets for Michael McDonald are available for 3 more weeks.
5. Steve also says golf and dinner reservations are available till this week's meeting.

This annual event is a blast! Join a foursome to play at the Links course in Highlands Ranch on Friday, August 12. The Links is an executive course located at 5815 E. Gleneagles Village Parkway. Following play will be a dinner buffet that you can also attend so you can hear epic tales of great shots on each hole! This Thursday is the last day to register.
GREAT GALA!
MESSAGE FROM DEBBY DOIG, CHAIR
.png) Given my 10 year commitment to the Bright Futures Gala, I have been working behind the scenes, with the incredible help of your Gala Committee, to make sure that this year's 11th Annual Gala is as wonderful as the many that came before it. Of course I want you to have fun, but the main reason we - as a Club - put the time and effort into this event is to ensure that we - as a Club - can continue to support the many organizations we passionately believe in.
I realize that Jerry Selinfreund has done a marvelous job contacting each of you and securing over $53,000 in sponsorships! Which means that almost all of you have agreed at one level or another to sponsor the Gala!!! That makes my heart happy and proud of our club.
However - given we are only now just TWO months away from the event, we are in serious need of auction items. If we were hold the event in the next couple of weeks, given the auction items we now have, we would not be able to meet the budget that the foundation has set for the 2016-2017 year. In fact, we would be $17,000 short! I would hate to put our Foundation Trustees in a position to not fund many of the projects they have committed to. So I strongly ask that you review the list below. These are tried and true items that bring us in the most amount of dollars when compared to their value. Thank you... And I miss you all - so much!
- Ask for gift certificates from your favorite restaurants
- Bring in bottles of wine
- Donate $$$’s for a basket
- Go through your jewelry for nice pieces
- Certificates for golf
PEACH & PEAR SALE IS UPON US:
THE KEYTONS SAY: BUY 'EM NOW AND BUY A LOT!
Even tho the Keytons are in Estes Park at RYLA, they've asked me to remind all Rotarians to talk to your family, friends and coworkers about this great fundraiser. DEADLINE TO ORDER IS AUGUST 11, so only 2 weeks to go!
What is better than a beautiful, ripe, sweet, flavorful, unblemished peach. Freeze 'em, smoothie them, fry them, bake them in a pie or a cake or cookies, make them into ice cream, cocktails, sauce, grill them...the list goes on and on. And with every bite, remember you're helping support a student to go to RYLA!
