A FABULOUS EVENING WITH  MEMBERS OF THE ARAPAHOE PHILHARMONIC

Saturday evening Rotarians enjoyed hearing a quartet from the Arapahoe Philharmonic.  Set up by Fred Warnaars and Steve Miller, 20 or so members enjoyed music, drinks and a potluck.

THE GREAT GALA!
Jerry Selinfreund was happy to announce that the first round of sponsorships are in for the 2016 Gala in the amount of $29,300! New this year presenting sponsorships were offered.  Many thanks to the Wilford Foundation, Jerry & Goldie Wilford; Cherry Creek Mortgage, Jimmy Kinley; and The McRae Allstate Agency, Michelle McRae.  Several other sponsorships and donations besides the presenting sponsors made up the great initial showing. As the Gala is our largest fundraising effort, seeing that half of what we raised last year is already on the books, leads us to believe we will surpass our goals.

COSTA RICA TRIP KEEPS ON GARNERING KUDOS!

Hi Mr. Simmermon,

This is Lia Jane Newman, one of the many peace corps volunteers you met while on your visit to Costa Rica. I am writing an e-mail that I hope you can share with all the Rotarians up in Colorado.

I want to thank you all so much, from the bottom of my heart, for supporting me and my community and their education. I am and will be working with the elementary schools to distribute books and celebrate their arrival. Having these books will serve as a great resource that will make a huge difference in the student’s education for years to come. Furthermore, is a resource that would not have been possible without you great and generous donation. I am forever grateful and appreciate for your generosity and support.

If there is anything at all that I can ever do for any of you (a Spanish/English translation, give information about Costa Rica, etc.) or you are ever in the Nantucket area please do not hesitate to contact me.

Again, thank you so much. We are all so grateful.

Best, Lia Jane Newman

WHO IS LI LIU?
You have seen Li at most all of Rotary’s events, most often behind the camera, as he’s the official photographer for the Wheel Spinner. Here is more information on this active member!

BACKGROUND
I was born in China and came to the US 30 years ago. My wife, Liang came many years later and we both became American citizens.  Laing is a software engineer for US Bank.  We have one daughter, Amber, who has accompanied me to many Rotary Events.  I hold an M.B.A from University of Denver, an M.A. from Ohio University, and a B.S. from Beijing University.

CAREER
I am the founder and Chief Investment Officer of Highlands Asset Management, Inc.  Prior to founding this firm, I was Vice President, Research Director, and Portfolio Manager of Asset Management Group (AMG) where I managed private accounts for high net-worth individuals.  Prior to joining AMG, I was a Financial Analyst at Founders Asset Management where I performed financial analysis and portfolio management for Founders’ Mutual Funds.  I am also a Certified Financial Analyst.

HOBBIES
I am interested in all readings. I love the mountains and enjoy hiking.

FAVORITE VACATION SITE
We love to vacation in very quiet places such as Aspen. Often our vacation sites are chosen around our love of good food!

ROTARY PASSION
The power of Rotary.  Before joining the club, I tried to get involved on my own to better the community.  Now that I’m in Rotary, the local and global opportunities are so easy to tap into.

SOMETHING NO ONE KNOWS!
I am a dedicated practitioner of Taiji (known in America as T’ai Chi). I practice every day for an hour and a half. Through Taiji, I’ve developed in interest in Chinese medicine & the connection with the human body.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

On a recent trip to Scottsdale, the Bramleys visited Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school.  An amazing man, not only as an architect, but philosopher as well. The next few issues of the Wheel will feature some of his quotes.
