Hello Rotary Friends,
We are so excited to begin another amazing year at Mountain Vista High School, we can't wait to see all that this year has in store! Thank you all very much for your ongoing support of our Interact Club!
These are the events we were involved with for the month of September 2015:
September 17, Peaceful Schools Training- we lead two training sessions to introduce new members to what a Peaceful Schools visit looks like and demonstrate some hands-on lessons
September 17, Project C.U.R.E.- we sorted donated medical supplies at Project C.U.R.E.'s international headquarters with members of the Rotary Club
September 19, Friends of Gueoul Mailing: we helped Judy Beggs, the founder of a nonprofit that helps send girls in Senegal to school, with her extensive mailing process
September 19, Bessie's Hope Visit: we visited Brookdale Alzheimer's/Dementia Care and visited with the residents while also making fall-themed crafts and singing songs
Thank you again for all your overwhelming support of our club!
MVHS Interact Secretary,
Hannah Murphy
The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch kicked off its Student Recognition program at its October 8th meeting.  Sophia Becker, a senior at Highlands Ranch, was recognized.  Her mother, Wendy, joined Sophia for the luncheon.  Sophia is president of the National Honor Society at Highlands Ranch.  Her GPA is 4.26 and she scored a 34 on her ACT.  The top score is a 36.  She was very poised as she told the members about a community service project she was involved in called Out of Darkness.  This is a suicide awareness program and a walk that took place at Coors Field.  Sophia helped organize and register participants.  After high school, Sophia will attend Colorado School of Mines and study Biochemical Engineering.  She hopes to go on to medical school or in the field of medical research.
Alberto "AJ" Stapleton was the Guest Speaker on October 8.  He was born and raised in Lima-Peru, South America. He migrated to Denver, Colorado in December of 1984.  His biggest passion in life is helping children and those in need. In 2008 AJ started recycling bikes, fixing them and then donating them to inner city Children in Colorado. In 2010 as a result of his charitable work and in response to God's call, he founded Project ReCycle a non-profit organization that provides bikes to the needy. They have distributed over 5000 bikes in 7 years to inner city children in the US and Africa. In 2012 he was awarded the Channel 7 Everyday Hero Award for his work in the community. In 2013 he received the Bike Denver Hero Award for his passion and commitment to the biking community. This year he was featured in Telemundo Denver “Unknown Heroes” who honor immigrants that have made a positive impact in our community.
