HRHS OUTDOOR CLASSROOM IS A DONE DEAL - THANKS TO EFFORTS OF ROTARY AND GARDEN CLUB

Students & community members working together
HRHS students, Rotarians & Garden Club members alike got their hands dirty at the outdoor classroom work day Saturday. I don't know if it was the threat of rain or temps in the 40s that got these 30 people inspired to complete the classroom in 4 hours!
Heather Berry, a teacher at the school, worked with the AP Environmental Science & AP Engineering students on the concept, the design, and reaching out to our community groups to garner support. The students then took pallets and turned them into bleacher seating, doing some school spirit painting as well.
This makes Highlands Ranch eligible to become a Green Flag School. It will become the first high school in the state to earn this designation. Awarded by EcoSchools, the international program is managed by the National Wildlife Federation.
Many thanks to Heather Berry for her work orchestrating the students in this project, Jim Bramley, Parapluie Construction, for being the high school's main contact, organizing and managing this work day, which was a year in the making. Big thanks to Kyle Kucharski, Kyle Kucharski Landscapes, for purchasing and planting 2 beautiful pines as anchors to the classroom.

I was lucky enough to fill in for Jerry Wolford at the presentation of Highlands Ranch community scholarships to Kendra Lavalle, Mountain Vista (left) and Haley Jacobs, Thunder Ridge. Our club has been involved for years. It was truly amazing how appreciative some of these students were. Many raised by single parents, many going to trade-type schools, others to local colleges. In a community of success it nice to see those in need receiving assistance!
The scholarship was created to reward Highlands Ranch students who have demonstrated well-rounded participation in their community or school through volunteerism and/or community service hours.
MOUNTAIN VIEW ROTARACT UPDATE
Thank you for your incredible, ongoing support of our club, we are so thankful for everything you've helped our club accomplish! We are excited to continue our partnership with you as we "pass the torch" onto a new team of interact leaders for the 2016-2017 school year. These are the events we were involved with for the month of April 2016:
April 7, Peaceful Schools Visit- We visited 1st and 3rd graders at a local elementary school to read them stories and perform activities to foster an environment of safety and understanding into their classrooms
April 21, Project C.U.R.E.- We sorted donated medical supplies at Project C.U.R.E.'s international headquarters with members of the Rotary Club, unboxing and sorting various medical supplies to be sent out to third world countries
Unfortunately, many of our events were cancelled to inclement weather this month, so we only had a few!
Please join the Highlands Ranch Rotary Sunrise Club for our regular meetings. The meetings are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 7:15 to 8:30 am at the south campus of Childrens Hospital at 1811 Plaza Dr. Highlands Ranch. We offer a delicious continental breakfast ($7.00 for members and guests). We also have wonderful speakers you will enjoy. This is a great opportunity for a make up meeting or for potential members that cannot attend noon meetings. If you plan to attend, please notify Ann Mather (Annmather@aol.com) or Paul Campbell (Paulcamp64@gmail.com) a day in advance. We look forward to seeing you!!!
