The Phenomenal Flair of Fly'n B Rotary

              Norman Rockwell's Thanksgiving

Norman Rockwell's painting is idealized and beautiful, but my best Thanksgiving memories are of the tense moments, not the relaxed. One involves my grandfather, who always liked to get a jump on his good cheer before his arrival. My father often invited a patient or two to join our immediate family of thirteen. One Thanksgiving the guest was an erudite gentleman from Ireland: a visiting professor at the University. Grandpa's parents were Irish immigrants and the tales he'd heard of the Emerald Isle as a child made heaven take a distant second place to the auld sod. This professor had the audacity to criticize various aspects of his own homeland and these were fighting words to my aged grandfather. Grandpa had never been to Ireland, never read the Irish Times, James Joyce or Oscar Wilde.

And yet he argued his points with certainties born of childish naiveté and Hollywood movies. His daughter, my mom, had to interrupt her turkey basting to referee what was angling toward becoming a donnybrook. In the end, she convinced the professor (an easier mark than her father) that we would all be (literally) better served if he would just accept my grandpa's uninformed declarations. When Dad said grace, he mentioned peace in the world “and at this very table.”

My freshman year in college I visited my new best friend's home for the Thanksgiving holiday. There his folks told of a past Thanksgiving transgression when, during his childhood, my buddy had watched a magician on TV pull a tablecloth from a table, leaving serving platters, silverware, and gravy boats undisturbed. Hopefully, and with appropriate abra-kadabra incantations, he attempted to duplicate this feat with mixed results. Mixed in the sense that after his monstrous tug just preceding the grace before the meal, the elements of the feast  were mixing and congealing over furniture, floors, and fronts of those at the table. As I sat there, listening to these reminiscences of my friend's youthful foibles, I noticed that my fly had been left unzipped. I surreptitiously adjusted the zipper with a painfully slow one-handed maneuver, taking care not to add the edge of the tablecloth to my undergarments. Sometimes one has to give up a better story ending  to be invited back in future years.

You needn't have visited the Scots, the Swedes, the Fins, the Norwegians, or the penguins for a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Last week we stayed home and the Aurora Borealis came to us like an order from Uber Eats! What an incredible geomagnetic world…Here's a poem you might identify with about what's worth waiting for:

Everything is waiting for you

by David Whyte

Your great mistake is to act the drama

as if you were alone. As if life

were a progressive and cunning crime

with no witness to the tiny hidden

transgressions. To feel abandoned is to deny

the intimacy of your surroundings. Surely,

even you, at times, have felt the grand array;

the swelling presence, and the chorus crowding out your solo voice. You must note

the way a soap dish enables you,

or the window latch grants you freedom.

Alertness is the hidden discipline of familiarity.

The stairs are your mentor of things

to come, the doors have always been there

to frighten you and invite you

and the tiny speaker in the phone

is your dream-ladder to divinity.

Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into

the conversation. The kettle is singing

even as it pours you a drink, the cooking pots

have left their arrogant aloofness and

seen you at last. All the birds

and creatures of the world are unutterably

themselves. Everything is waiting for you.

Jan Keyton with a recent RYLA camper and possible future camp counselor who let us know about the life-changing elements of this program. He stated that he is focused on “a greater common good.”

Jane Anderson was our featured speaker at the November 13th Noon Meeting. She is the volunteer-coordinator at Canyon Home Care and Hospice. Her message was aimed at Veterans, but could be applied to all at the end-of-life journey. She stressed the importance of active listening. This involves “being present and fully engaging with another person. Paying attention to their voice, the emotion they are showing and the story that's being shared…” She was introduced by her proud dad, Ray Anderson.

Robin, Elaine, Terre and Elizabeth    were the four angels who helped students from the Douglas County Bridge Program decorate bags for Project Angel Heart. These will be filled with goods for needy families!

                       ***

Toasts will be happening at the Holiday Party which will take place at the Highlands Ranch Senior Center (200 E Highlands Ranch Parkway) on December 6th from 6pm to 9pm. Wine and beer are gratis and the club will provide the entrees and ask members to bring their favorite side dish to share. Plan to be there and if you would be so kind, contact Nancy Barton or Terre Cone if you are able to help out! All three branches of RCHR are invited!

Another highlight from the November 13th meeting: we welcomed another student who is applying for the Rotary Scholarship. In the future this impressive young man aspires to serve as a Navy Seal.

To Forgive, Divine

I mistakenly wrote that Debby Doig had thrown her hat into the ring in pursuit of a second presidency. She has not. She is, however, charged with heading the committee selecting that officer who will follow Terre Cone as the Noon Club President. My apologies.
