Morgan Nock
The members enjoyed Morgan and her parents joining the club for lunch this past Thursday.  The club recognized Morgan as an outstanding student.  She is a senior at Rock Canyon High School.  Morgan was nominated by her AP Spanish teacher, Chantal Woods.  Ms Woods was present for the luncheon as well.  Also in attendance from Rock Canyon was the assistant principal, Kevin Carey and Deena Ellis.  Morgan is active at Rock Canyon including playing lacrosse where she led the team as a defender.  Morgan has done several trips to Mexico including one last spring where she and other high school students help build a house in Juarez.  This past summer she was on a trip to Nicaragua and worked as a volunteer in a medical clinic.  Morgan told the club about this experience and how she would like to become a nurse and become involved in helping third world countries.  Morgan truly has a heart for service and helping others.
Sarah Olson
It was nice to recognize Sarah Olson as an outstanding student this past Thursday.  Sarah is the daughter of Grant and Karla Olson, who are both very active with our Rotary Club.  Sarah is a senior at Mountain Vista High School.  She enjoys playing tennis, DECA and the Interact Club.  Sarah and a friend started the Mountain Vista Interact Club when they were freshmen.  They both serve as co-presidents of the club which has successfully grown to 80 members at the high school level.  She has had wonderful experiences attending RYLA this past summer.  She was also a counselor for RYLA Plus and worked with teens with disabilities.  Sarah did a great job telling the members about this experience of being a counselor for RYLA Plus.  Sarah intends to study marketing in college.  She will likely attend University of Colorado or University of Denver.

JUST WHAT IS ROTARY READERS?
Rotary Readers is our club's literacy outreach program at Bear Canyon
Elementary in Highlands Ranch.  Because of funding cuts in the school
district, the schools are depending on family and community members to
volunteer.

Rotarians work hand-in-hand with the first grade teachers to assist new
readers in their core skills.  We've committed to weekly sessions in the
classroom.  From 9-10:30 am, we have 2 Rotarians working with groups of
3-4 students on their reading skills.  The teaching staff provide the
curriculum - it can be anything from working on vowels to vocabulary
to reading comprehension. The teachers felt continuity is key to getting
students comfortable with the program. So we have teams of two go in once
a week in one month increments.  The first week you’ll get there 15 minutes
early for a quick training BY THE TEACHERS on the reading skill for the
month. This is brilliant, as we absolutely do NOT have to create content, the
teachers are in control AND teaching us what to do! At month’s end, your
session is over.

Here are the particulars:
DAY/TIME:  Mondays from 11:15 to 12:15, except for the first week when
you’ll go in early for training.

BACKGROUND CHECK: The school does their own background check, so
you’ll need to complete their form, along with a copy of your driver’s license
and submit it a week before your rotation.

NO BAGS! The district has asked volunteers to leave handbags& backpacks
in the car.  Just use pockets for your wallet, glasses, etc. that you’ll need in
teaching

We are in need of 2 volunteers per month for February, March and April.  If
you’re interested, contact Sue Bramley at 303.683.6647 or
sueannebramley@yahoo.com.
District Governor Mary Kay Hasz was the guest speaker on November 12.  Mary Kay talked about her travel in the district and the interesting things that have  happened so far.  Her talked centered around the Rotary International Foundation and how important it is to the goals of Rotary.  She encouraged all members to give at least $100 a year to the RI Foundation.  This is easy to do by having the treasurer bill you $25 extra each quarter or going to rotary.org and use your credit credit.
The Highlands Ranch Rotary Foundation presented Jennifer Walker, Executive Director, a $2000 check for the Crisis Center in Douglas County at the November 12 meeting.
