DID YOU MISS LAST WEEK'S MEETING? HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
OUR SPEAKER WAS EXCHANGE STUDENT BRUNA FOLLE
By Jan Keyton
Our 2015-16 Exchange Student, Bruna is from Brazil. Her presentation last Thursday encompassed her year in Colorado, which she termed “the BEST YEAR of my life……….so far”. She lived with 3 different families during her stay. Bruna's native language is Portugese. When she gets back to Brazil, her next semester will find her studying all subjects as she prepares for a large test which determines if she will be admitted into college. She is not planning to attend the upcoming Olympics as it is ‘too expensive’. She is an only child and loved having siblings here in CO, but will be happy to return to her peace & quiet without sibling fighting!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL:
CHANGING OF THE GUARD - WE SAY GOODBYE TO K.R. RAVINDRAN

My dear friends,
On every July 1st, a page turns in Rotary. One Rotary year ends, and another begins; we do not lay down our pen but only lift it from the page, as we write the final lines of one chapter and consider the first lines of the next.
The story of the 2015-16 Rotary year has now been written and my friends, you have written it well. We end our year with a net gain of over 30,000 members, and global membership approaching all-time highs. Our convention was the second-largest in Rotary history, with extremely positive reviews. Rotary Global Rewards, launched only one year ago, now contains over 1,350 offers and is approaching 100,000 site visits. And we are closer than ever to our goal of eradicating polio, with only seventeen cases of polio caused by the wild poliovirus to date in 2016.
These are achievements that all of us can be proud of. But we all know that the true story of Rotary this year was written, not in Evanston by its officers, but in every one of Rotary’s clubs and districts, by each of you, and by the Rotarians you have led, motivated, and inspired. The story of this Rotary year is the work of your minds, your hands, and your hearts; the story of health, of education, and of hope that you have brought to countless people, in every corner of the Rotary world.
In the final days of this year, I found my mind returning to the words I spoke on the final day of our International Assembly: “Every story has an end. But in life, every end is a new beginning.” The story of our year together, in Rotary office, has now been written. Again, a fresh page awaits us, empty, waiting to be filled. The pen hovers above it. What will it write?
That, my friends, is up to every one of us. The opportunities of our offices may be over, but those of Rotary remain: opportunities to serve, to change lives, to be part of our business of miracles, and to Be A Gift to the World.
I thank you for your service, for your trust, and for your confidence in me, and I wish you all the best in many years of Rotary service ahead. You are, and you will remain, a gift to me, as you are A Gift to the World.
Regards,
K.R. Ravindran, Rotary International President, 2015-16
A NEW APPROACH TO THE PROGRAM COMMITTEE
Cindy Begley has left the chairmanship of the Program Committee to focus on her duties as President Elect. Rather than have one person try to produce 30-50 programs per year as we have in the past, Sue Bramley came up with the idea to arrange weekly programs - by committee. Going forward, Sue will chair the group, made up of Zig Bergins, Natasha Nola and David Blackwell. Each member will seek and research potential speakers, schedule and introduce them at club meetings. This new structure is working well - we're scheduled out to mid-November with different & interesting speakers. The committee is making another change - starting in October, every 3rd Thursday, the meeting will be dedicated to club business. This will give us time to present everything from treasurer and foundation reports to other special interest presentations. Our commitment to you is to provide engaging programs and provide dedicated time for club business.
...OUR FIRST BIG EVENT - A DEBATE
Our first big program will be held on September 29 when we present a debate on Amendment 69 - Cover Colorado. Zig is bringing together Colorado's State Treasurer, Walter Stapleton, to present the 'con' side of the argument and Kai Abelkis, a Boulder Rotary Club member, representing Colorado Care, the not-for-profit promoting Amendment #69. This will be a first for our club and give members a view from both sides in order to make an educated choice on this new proposal.
