Welcome to Our Newest Members inducted on January 8
Herb Weissenfels
I grew up in New York until I moved to Indiana to attend Valparaiso University where I got my B.A (1963) majoring in math and p.e.. I later went to Humboldt State College in California where I got a Masters in Biology. Several years later I got my Educational Specialist degree from Ft. Hays State University in Kansas amd majoring in educational administration. I did my research paper on the state wide teacher internship program which was being piloted at the time. The results were finally published.
I taught and coached in Cuba, N.M.; Antonito, Co.; Sanford, Co; and Bayfield, Co.. I then served as principal for several years before becoming superintendent in Tribune, Kansas. I finally retired the first time from Payson, Arizona as a Superintendent. Counting all the years I have been in education 50 years.
While teaching in the San Luis valley I served ont the Colorado Education associations state governing board and also as a legislative liaison. In Kansas I was president of the athletic league and also served briefly as president of the Kansas Educational Negotiators. In Arizona I served two terms as president of the Arizona School Administrators and also on the Arizona School Administrators governing board. I was a charter member of the Arizona Business and Educators Coalition and served as secretary treasurerhile on the board. When retiring I was made a member emeritis for life. I have also worked as a consultant while in Arizona.
I have had some publications in football and teacher training publications and have presented at national conferences.
After moving back to Colorado I was recruited to serve as interim principal at Shepherd of the Hills and then at Trinity. For a twist when I first returned to Colorado I worked a short time as a funeral director. That was a real learning experience.
I have a son and a daughter living in the Denver area and four granddaughters. My wife's sons live in Michigan and there are two girls and a boy grandchildren there. I work on building miniature houses and furniture as well as being a stamp collector.

I was a Sr. Enrollment Manager for University of Phoenix before coming to Edward Jones about a year ago. My wife, Kerstin, was born and raised in Denver. We have 2 boys, Elijah (2 1/2 yrs) and Matthias (7 mos). We love anything to do in the mountains and also love to travel.

Lisette Clemons gave an interesting program on January 8 on the history of the Arlington Ladies. The Arlington Ladies are a group of women who attend the funeral of every member of the United States armed forces who is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
The history of the group traces its existence to 1948, when Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force Hoyt Vandenberg, and his wife Gladys, witnessed young service members being buried without any family members present on one of their walks through the cemetery. Just a chaplain and a military honor guard, the standard attendees, were usually present. The lack of anyone honoring the young airman being buried prompted Gladys to form a group of members of the Officers' Wives Club to attend all Air Force funerals. In 1972, the wife of Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams, Julia, founded the Army's version of the group. In 1985, the Navy also followed suit by creating a group of their own.
The ladies typically do not know much about the service member except the details the chaplain provides. The group initially included military wives, but it now includes military daughters and even a gentleman. The Army Arlington ladies must be wives or widows of Army men and be referred by a current wife. The Navy and Air Force follow similar requirements for their ladies.
Zachary Begley, son of Cindy and Michael Begley and a HRRC Scholarship recipient, regaled us with two songs at the January 8 meeting with his great voice.
