Bill Monsour gave a program on "Vietnam through My Eyes" at the last meeting. Bill graduated from a Syracuse high school in 1963 and found himself with three choices—go to college, get married, or be drafted. He chose college; however, after three years in a community college, he was drafted and found himself on his way to Fort Dix and subsequently another Army camp in Maryland. He really wanted to serve in Vietnam and volunteered to do so. After four months in intelligence training, he thought he was on his way but was assigned to Germany instead. He managed to get reassigned and on Thanksgiving Day 1966 he was on his way to Vietnam. His story continued with his first 13 days in repo camp with the 1st that distinguished them with a “Big Red 1” patch and under the command of General William DePuy. After some confusion, he was given the job of searching out Vietnamese who might be able to give them a glimpse into any Viet Cong activity. Along with interpreters, he traveled jungle roads to villages to seek out information from the natives who were rewarded for their help. In one instance, the farmers requested a water buffalo.
