NEW OFFICERS ELECTED TO THE SUNRISE CLUB
By Ann Mather
Editor’s note: Get to know Joel & Russell better by reading their profiles this week and next!

The Sunrise Club is very proud to announce Joel Johnson as the Sunrise Club’s new Co-chair and Russell Hatten is the Co-chair Elect Nominee. Both will be attending PETS in March. Joel will be co-chairman with Paul Campbell for the 2016-2017 Rotary year. I'll be stepping down, as I have served in that role for 2 years.  We look forward to our new leadership and know the Sunrise Club will thrive under their terms. Thank you Joel and Russell!!!

NCOA GOLF TOURNAMENT SCHEDULED
Golfers unite! Teams are being set up for the tourney, which will be on Friday, May 20 at Cheyenne Shadows Golf Course, on base at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs.  The club has participated in this event for several years.  It’s an 18 hole, championship course situated at the dramatic base of Cheyenne Mountain.
“I won one year with only 6 legs in our foursome!” said Jan Selinfreund, who’s group had 2 amputees play that day.

The event helps the club raise funds for the work we do with the Non-commissioned Officers Association, which we outlined last week in the Wheel.  Check out the fun pictures below!
Nice BBQ lunch served by the NCOA wives
Big sponsorship, big crowd!
How is it Jan got to play with all the cuties??
Can you see her amongst the big guns?

Tim Sparks & Jerry Selinfreund with the obligatory Dove Bars!

FRED WARNAARS  HAS PUT TOGETHER A HARMONIOUS SOCIAL
FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE ARAPAHOE PHILHARMONIC

Saturday, March 26, plan to spend a cultural evening with Fred Warnaars at his Coventry Clubhouse. This will be a special evening, as Fred has arranged to have a quartet from the Arapahoe Philharmonic Orchestra perform chamber music - instrumental music played by a small ensemble.

The event will run from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at 5011 W. Bowles Ave.  Bring a potluck item and the club will provide drinks.  The quartet will perform from approximately 4:30-5:30. Don't miss this fun evening – sign up sheets will go around at the club meeting.

WHAT IS THE CLUB CARE CALENDAR?
The club has been looking for a way to keep track of members who need a helping hand.  We’ve referred to it a few times in regards to Doug & Debby Doig. Connie Golas found a solution - CareCalendar. It’s a free website to organize meals and other help for families in need during a time of illness or life changing event.  If you find yourself in need of a little help, contact Carolyn Bradish, who chairs the club’s FAMILY OF ROTARY committee.  She & Connie set up the page for you listing help needed and your family and friends can sign up to fill those needs. CareCalendar can also be used for long term situations.

RIVERDANCE EVENT A SUCCESS!

MEMBER PROFILES:
JOEL JOHNSON, new co-chair of the Sunrise Club

CAREER
My career started in WY in 1982 as an engineer/construction manager for oil and gas with Amoco. I moved into environmental consulting in the 90s, working on cleanup of contaminated Superfund sites around the country including the largest DDT manufacturing facility in the US.
My wife and I returned to Colorado where I worked corporately, then consulting and senior management jobs in Denver and Colorado Springs.  In 2006 I co-founded a wind energy development company focused on early stage development of utility-scale windfarms.

HOBBIES
I enjoy being physically active. Hobbies include hiking, camping, pickleball, kickboxing.  I also took up private pilot flying.

WHERE FROM/COLLEGE
I was born in Roswell, NM and lived there until I was 18 - unfortunately never saw an alien.  My family were sheep and cattle ranchers on a 32,000-acre ranch. I went to high school at New Mexico Military Institute and then to CU in Navy ROTC where I received a BS in Mechanical Engineering, then an MBA from Stanford.

ROTARY PASSION
I especially enjoy giving my time to the events where we help other organizations and meet the people that really need our help.

FAVORITE VACATION SITE
I’m not sure I have just one.  In recent years we went to Maine and Rhode Island and then to Victoria, BC.  We have an old family cabin in Ruidoso, NM that is a nice place to get away, although with all of the maintenance it is hardly a vacation.

SOMETHING COOL THAT NO ONE KNOWS
At Stanford a classmate & I  started an “International Peace Corps” called World Service with an initial grant from the Ford Foundation.  The purpose was to do meaningful projects around the world. Our first was an ecotourism facility in Guanacaste National Park, Costa Rica.  We raised money and recruited volunteers from Tanzania, the Soviet Union, the US, and Costa Rica to help a local non-profit and us with project management and construction.  The pilot project was a great personal experience.
