Weekly Bulletin : August 1, 2024
Photo of the week submitted by new member Kristy Hayzlett with a #shoutout for jumping right in as a new member. Kristy admits she does not love public speaking, so we are giving her a Rotary pat on the back for HOURS of work last week helping with meal delivery! Kristy is already contributing (more than just fabulous charcuterie at the changing of the guard). Even during a very busy work month in two states, she made time in July to help, and she has stepped forward to Chair the Social Committee so that Jane Kucharski could hand that off after years of service. Thanks to Jan and thanks to Kristy for your Service above Self last month.
Noon Meeting Notes & Announcements
President Arthur led our weekly meeting and passed the mic to Bill Simmermon to offer our Inspiration and Pledge.

Bill chose to use the time to share the application that Terre Cone has written as a submission for a District Award for Marion
Trummer.

Marion has been a leader in our club and a devoted member for 35+ years. She served as our President in the 2001-2002 Rotary Year and she has actively participated in leadership for RYLA, with Rotary International Youth Exchange, Rotary Global Exchange, and the Warrior Bonfire Program. Marion has made 8 literacy trips to Costa Rica; she also helps in other ways such as providing meals for Eagle Academy, Ronald McDonald House, IFCS, Denver Childrens' Hospital, the Santa Claus program at Kohl's, and finally she has helped other clubs get organized including Castle Pines and our own Flyin' B. Marion, thank you for all that you do!

Guests last week included another visitor with Bill Simmermon. Justin is considering our club and we hope he will join us! Bill, thanks for bringing potential new members as frequently as you do! Jan Keyton introduced us to Nina Lewis, a speaker/presenter at the meeting who is also President of THE Rotary Club of Greeley. We had another visiting Rotarian, Bob Evans, though we did not catch his club affiliation if he did mention it.

Claudia read the names of our members celebrating birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and Rotary join anniversaries for the month. and she also reminded us that IFCS still has an ongoing need for feminine hygiene products. They are unable to use government assistance vouchers for those, so if you can pick up extras when you shop, they are MUCH needed and always appreciated. (Note, they do sell some of these items at the Dollar Tree in Highlands Ranch if you shop there.) Claudia also reminded us that Flyin' B is truly FLYIN' with yet another member, bringing them to 19! WAY TO GO, Win, and team!

Then we had the Presentation of the Rock this week from Debby Doig. Debby took a moment to share a story that was very heartwarming about her selection. When Debby's late husband was nearing the end of his life, Connie Golas, a nurse by training, offered not just to help and keep him company regularly, but on the eve of his death, she stayed OVERNIGHT on an air mattress with him so that Debby could rest well because it was also the eve of one of her children's rehearsal dinner and wedding! We know all Rotarians are terrific and we know we all believe in the 4 Way Test, but it seems like Connie is one of those very special people -and there are MANY in our wonderful club - who truly LIVE by our motto - Service Above Self. Thank you, to both ladies, for their leadership by example.

We had two speakers this week. First up, was the enthusiastic Nina Lewis from THE Rotary Club of Greeley. Nina shared a lot about her work with Youth Leading Youth, which is a small non-profit, and our club offered $500 in support to help her serve her community's young people. Nina is herself a former "RYLArian" from 1988 and fully lives her mission to engage and teach young people through experiences like RYLA. She was a powerhouse speaker and reminds us that when we support young people we are touching the future!

Our second speaker was also charming and engaging as she shared about the not-always-appreciated, but IMPORTANT TSA. Carie Muirhead is the Liaison to the Aviation Director at TSA and she works at our Denver Airport. (Do you still call it DIA? Did you know we are supposed to refer to it as DEN?) She shared quite a few fun facts and stories and some information that was not at all funny about the threats from which TSA protects travelers.

On the funny side, Denver is the 6th on the list of the 400+ Federalized airports for firearms and weapons that are seized at security. The fun fact is that the #1 group of "guilty" travelers are people who have TSA Pre-check! Friends, when traveling, please check your guns and weapons in your luggage per regulations. You cannot bring 'em on a plane! Also, you might hold off on traveling after you light fireworks...they are most interested in trace explosives in your hair, hands, and clothing. That is what they are looking for. And please stop complaining about only being able to carry 3.4 ounces of liquid; there is a reason. More than that - if its the wrong substance - can put a hole in an aircraft. The rules are there to keep us all safe. So, next time you stand in that line, maybe thank the TSA workers in the spirit of Rotary. (And don't forget to wear Rotary gear and pins when you travel; Rotarians recognize each other and people tend to be nice to us!)

News of the Week & Announcements from the Meeting and from your Emails to the WS "Team":
Our updates start with PEACHES & PEAR SALES. Please note this is the last week; we are in the home stretch. Friends, family, and neighbors all need to know and if you are able, maybe grab an extra box and divvy them up as gifts. Everyone seems to love our peaches and peachy gifts! Also note, that there are recipes online for you to make that are wonderful. (You can just throw them over ice cream or throw them on the grill!) Bill and Jan have done such a great job! We have 781 sold as of last week.

Jan also took a moment when doing this update to remind anyone interested in attending the RYLA picnic dinner at Northridge to RSVP by 8/10 so she can order food. It is at 5:30 in the Pavillion. If you have not been there, just turn in to Northridge parking lot and continue past the rec center and the outdoor pools. Straight ahead in the rear lot, you will see the baseball fields and the pavillion and there is handicap parking nearby if you require that. The pavillion is also covered and has seating. Though you might prefer your chair if it fills up.

Bright Futures is doing well; we have 30 days more and we are at $104,000! We still have about 20 members who have not yet committed and contributed. Please know, it's ok if you can only contribute a small amount right now. We hope to have 100% participation. Also, please remember that you can use RMD (required mandatory distribution) and some employers will offer matching.

Consider asking family, friends, and colleagues for modest contributions to "your Rotary club". The people who know us well know how much we love Rotary. This is a chance for them to support us as individuals. It never hurts to ask, right?

Quick kudos, again, to Jane who is passing the social baton to Kristy Hayzlett, a new member. Kim DeCoste has also offered to help be a "partner in crime" in social and party planning but Kristy will chair this effort so Jane can relax a bit at the next event! Thank you ladies!

We do still need a new International Committee Chair. This is a dynamic group and we think even more opportunities to travel will come in the future. If you have the time to help here, it would be much appreciated and lots of fun.

Remember we have District Conference on September 28th. Please come support our very own District Governor, Tamie, and if you would like to help in the House of Friendship for a 30-minute "shift", please reach out to President Arthur and "First Lady" Terre.

The Ronald McDonald House event is on August 7th. They will be doing a cookout and they have 6 volunteers but please reach out to President Arthur if you plan to attend or can be there.

We also have WESTERN WELCOME WEEK coming soon on 8/17. If you are interested in helping there, please sign up when you come to the next meeting.

Elizabeth reminds us to consider Help and Hope who does need some support and please also do not forget to note your volunteer hours so we keep a good tally!

We auctioned the golf foursome and raised $300 for the club with that donation from the Trivia team; thank you, smart people!

For Family of Rotary, we note thoughts to Anne Lester, Phil Calderbank, and Rizzo this week.

Our Happy Dollars were happy as always. One note - Our very own Phil Clarke drew the attention of The Rotarian Magazine. Phil asks if we would consider (after reading our copies) bringing them to the meeting on the 22nd which happens to be his birthday, so that he can share them with family and friends who are interested in having those.

Additional Notes:

Please remember that if you need time at the podium for the noon meeting, President Arthur asks that you notify him (however is easiest for you) at least by Wednesday so that he can plan and keep us on time.

If you have a committee or meeting we need to be reminded of here in YOUR Wheel Spinner, please email the "team" and please make sure it says in the subject "For the WS or For the Wheel Spinner" so that we see it. Thanks in advance!

Have a great afternoon and we shall see you, hopefully, on Thursday!

Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world?

Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship. Becoming a Rotarian connects you with a diverse group who share your drive to give back.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
