Our program last week presented the students we awarded this year's RYLA and YoungRYLA leadership camp experience to, along with many of their parents attending. We were most fortunate to provide funds for Eight RYLA spaces (high school incoming juniors or seniors) who attended camp in July in Estes Park at the YMCA camp (each of two separate weeks of camp contained nearly 200 students plus Jr & Sr Counselors) and Five YoungRYLA spaces (incoming Eighth graders) who attended camp in July/August at the Ponderosa Retreat Center near Monument CO (two separate weeks of camp of 130 students plus Jr & Sr Counselors).
The students spoke at our meeting sharing their heartfelt experiences of learning to be leaders, and followers too, to make many new friendships, to be good listeners for their peers and speakers, to get in touch with their feelings and be compassionate of others, to step out of their Comfort Zone and try new activities, and to have "the best week of their life" so far. This is a truly rewarding experience !!
Our student speakers were: Estee Medberry, STEM High Academy; Sarah Olson, Mtn Vista HS; Emily Abed, Mtn Vista HS; Abby Blackwood, Heritage HS; Ryan Lane, Mtn Vista HS; Isabel Figueroa, Cresthill MS; and Jennifer Suson, Ben Franklin Academy.
I have shared letters from the following campers: Tyler Campbell, Highland HS/Phoenix; Megan Lindsey, Ranch View MS; and Vivian Zheng, Rocky Heights MS. The following also attended camp: Dat Duong and Michelle Figueroa, Aurora Central HS (both from BoysHopeGirlsHope) and Tanner Schmitz, Rocky HeightsMS
For all of you Rotarians who attended this program, I do hope you enjoyed learning more about RYLA and YoungRYLA via first-hand experienced campers.

"Throughout the week I experienced many challenges that I expected before coming but I didn't know the impact they would have on me until I experienced them. Once I got into my group I was pretty nervous but once we started to get to know each other better, we really started working as a team. As we debriefed after every activity, the values and traits we thought were important were trust, communication, and encouragement. These new characteristics really shined through as we experienced more activities; this was one of my favorite parts. The trust fall was definitely one of my favorites because this activity really bonded our team together through the powerful value of trust. The zip line and rope course was really fun and I got to face a little fear of heights which made me feel really great. After the week was over I really felt that I would be taking these experiences and skills home with me. As I start school now, I'm very excited to put what I learned to work."

But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil,
