District Conference Keynote Speaker Debra Fine (above)

The Fine Art of Small Talk

Little tips yielding big results! Our third test at Rotary is “to build goodwill and better friendships.” To that end, the District presented the noted author and motivational speaker, Debra Fine:

“Small talk is an opportunity to meet someone new or get

to know someone better. Think of the close relationships

in your life, they probably started with small talk,” says Debra.

“I like to think of every conversation as an opportunity, but approach it

without an agenda. You might even find that

approaching a conversation without expecting anything in particular can help you relax and enjoy yourself.

A lot of times, especially in North America, we speak in rhetorical

questions. ‘How are you?’ just means ‘Hello.’ So it’s important to dig in deeper and let people know that you’re genuine. For example, if you run into someone at the grocery store you haven’t seen in a while, the conversation may go, ‘How was your summer?’ ‘Good!’

they say. Now it’s time to dig in deeper: ‘What was one of the highlights?’”

Asking follow-up questions not only shows that you’re interested in what

the person has to say, but that you’re listening to them, too.”

Helpful advice. For more from Debra, check out her book “The Fine Art of Small Talk.”

In Memoriam: Phil Calderbank

Past Governor Tamie Fennell's first award for service was to Past Governor Ray Anderson.

Another event at the District Conference had many nations represented by exchange students for the planting of a Peace Pole on the Epic Campus by the Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch. Here the students can be seen waiting for someone to lead the singing of John Lennon's “Imagine.”

Sunrise Club Notes (including goats?)

via Colette Hepp:

In addition to district conference, board meeting, and foundation updates, we covered the following items at our meeting last week:

  • Kohl’s Santa Clothes - We have identified 16 children to participate at this event on December 10 (thank you Jim and Deb!). Therefore, we’ll need 16 volunteers to help take them shopping. We have increased the amount of their shopping allowance to $125 this year and will give any leftover funds once again to the Indian Center.

  • Brent’s Place breakfast crew upcoming dates: 10/31, 11/21 and 12/12.

Recycle event – Scheduled for May 9 at St. Andrews, but we have lost our electronics vendor, and others are difficult to find. We’re discussing whether to bring in other types of recycling (paper, chemicals, etc.), while keeping the paint recycling. More discussion to come.

  • Goat Walkabouts – we enjoyed hearing from Jimmy Naron, the head of Goat Walkabouts, a 501(c)3 organization that rescues goats who provide therapy to individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, Down syndrome, PTSD and other challenges. They also use the goats for fire mitigation and traditional land clearing methods, managing natural habitats that surround our communities. They are donation-based and Jimmy and his son are passionate about their goats!

  • Our next Sunrise Board meeting is on 10/29/25 at 7:15 a.m. at Lost Coffee.

Party Time!!!

Join us for our annual Holiday Party on Saturday, December 6th, from 6-9 pm at the Highlands Ranch Senior Center. Wine and beer are gratis. The club will provide the entree and we will ask members to bring their favorite side dish to share. See sign-up sheets on the back table beginning Thursday, October 23rd.  Entertainment to be announced soon. We are seeking 6-7 energetic elves to volunteer to decorate, set-up and clean up. Contact Terre Cone or Nancy Barton with questions. Members from all 3 clubs are encouraged to join us!

Thanks for reading and thanks to Beth Clarke for her help. Please send submissions to philipbclarke@gmail.com and put Wheel Spinner in the subject line.
