Weekly Bulletin for the week of March 13, 2025

Georgiana Quintana from Eagle Academy with two lovely students
They thanked us and we offered another $500 to support Eagle Academy

The Club generously offered $500 to The Bramley's granddaugther, Avery, and her friend, Valentina. The girls bought materials for blankets.

The blankets were made and will go to residents in Vi where they volunteer.
Spring is just around the corner!

Noon Meeting Notes & Announcements:

We were delighted to have Maria Narvaez back after her car accident. She was our greeter last week.

Our Inspiration was given by Chip Hartney. He shared an excerpt from a book written about mindful thinking. It was a thoughtful observation about being present in the moment and appreciating now. It was clear the club liked what he read. Thanks, Chip.

Our Guests were:
  • The Bramley's granddaughter, Avery Simms and her friend, Valentina, joined us.  They presented a need for cash to support comfort blanket making. The members who generously offered cash on the spot, deserve extra thanks and the girls sent their regards with the photos above.

Li passed The Rock on to Pete Grondorf who works so quietly behind the scenes. Pete has fixed countless "little" things and is vigilant about solving simple problems when they arise. Thanks, Pete!

Debbie Leonard received her Double Ruby Pin from the Paul Harris Foundation. Kudos, Debbie, for your ongoing support of Rotary International.

Our presentation was a brief but effective "thank you" from Eagle Academy for our ongoing support. Eagle Academy is an alternative school that helps kids who need additional support and resources. The students, Daphne and Lauren, were humble and offered a heartfelt thank you, explaining that they have benefitted enormously from the school and from our support.

They reminded us that the Prom we have supported is now 3 years in the running and is a valuable part of their academic experience.

We awarded them an additional $500 and will continue to support through dinners and special events. Thanks to all who have been instrumental in this effort.

President Arthur took to the podium following that presentation and opened the mic for announcements for the rest of the meeting.

  • We are still looking for Rotary Readers for Arrowood Elementary.

  • Elizabeth is doing her blanket project on the 25th. Please reach out to her directly if you plan to attend. Remember to cut your fabric in advance.

  • Sue and Alan will be heading a Blood Drive on 4/19. We will need volunteers to help and we need donors. It will be at the Lone Tree Golf Club.

  • We are still seeking hosts for the Friendship Dinners on 4/11 and 4/12. Please reach out to Terre or Arthur if you are able to help out, as Nancy is out of town and Kristy has been working out of town the past few weeks. There will be sign up sheets at the meeting. We would like to see 8-10 per home. It is a hosted BYOB potluck. The host offers the main dish.

  • Chip announced that the price of lunch is increasing and we will be evaluating dues. For the 27 people who have still not paid dues, please check your SPAM folder and make that payment as soon as possible. We will have information forthcoming in the next invoice for direct payment with a credit card. If you want to authorize recurring changes, you must submit a signed form to the Club. Details to follow.

  • President Arthur announced that we will have a table in the House of Friendship in Calgary. We hope our members in attendance will offer a few hours to work at the table representing our club and our contributions. Please speak with Arthur if you have any questions. We will be presenting the "Solar Panels for Humanity" program; it is an expansion of Solar Panels for Ukraine. There will be 35,000 Rotarians there, so it is a great time to see Rotary International at work in North America!

For
Family of Rotary we were OVER THE MOON to see Bob Larson back after 4 long months. Welcome back, Bob.

On a more somber note, we had an update on Anne Lester, who continues her battle with brain cancer. There were mixed results after the last round of treatment.  To the Lesters, please know you are in our thoughts and we are here if you need us for anything. Thanks to Debby for the update.

I believe this is what we covered in the meeting.  Debby won the 50/50. Additional notes follow below from committees and community service. Have a great week and see you Thursday!

 COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM THE PAST WEEK & THE MEETINGS

Sunrise Meetings Group Update

Thank you to Collette and Cindy for helping us make sure we update the group on the great work of our Sunrise Club this month.

Flyin' B Meeting Highlights:

  • Big news from Flyin' B - they are NO LONGER a Satellite Club, but rather a
Companion Club to The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch.
  • Also, they are 6 weeks away from the 501(c)4 designation and the e-postcard filing of the taxes!
  • The decision was made not to move forward with the Mike Oldham Scholarship at this time. They have chosen the site for Mike's Bench Plaque. It will be near his favorite trails near the Evergreen Crossing Pergola and Mill Vista. They have raised over $700 in his memory and there is still a chance to donate to cover the costs of the tree and plaque. Checks made out to Bill Butler in TC cubbie 2301.
  • Stuff & Stitch is usually monthly at CC#1422. It is the last Thursday of the Month anytime from 9:30-3:00.The next one is on 3/8 from 3-4 on the 2nd Floor.

  • The following events have been approved by Wind Crest for the year to date:

    • Electronic Recycling 5/2/25

    • Shoe Collection 5/17/25

    • Blood Drives 5/31 and 11/1/25

    • Trees/Pollinator Planting in April/May

The next meeting will be on 3/27 in the Windows Dining Room.

Youth / RYLA

It is time to start looking for young people to attend our RYLA and Young RYLA camps. These are sleep away camps that are fully paid for for the kids and their families. RYLA focuses on leadership and fellowship for young people and is often the beginning of a life-long commitment to Rotary.

Look around at your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc.

For RYLA we we are seeking Sophomore, Junior, and Senior kids, and for Young RYLA, 7th graders. Camp is in the summer and it is a wonderful, life-changing experience for many kids. Please contact Jan Keyton if you are interested or go to
RockyMountainRYLA.com

Final Notes:

DG Tamie asked us to consider taking up the placement of "Peace Poles" around Highlands Ranch. This is widely done in Australia and is an inexpensive "mark" ( ~$300) we can make in the name of Peace at our local schools and Civic Buildings. There is a group working on this. They are trying to identify/get approval for the appropriate location. Steve Miller and Claudia are collaborating on this effort.

The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch

A reminder that we will need a replacement Editor for The Wheel Spinner by April 1, 2025 at the latest. If you are interested, please contact Kim DeCoste or President Arthur.

Final note, I am able to help the club order new tshirts or logo gear that we can choose, and each person can order what they like and have it sent to them.

I have done this before for personal and public events and groups using something called CustomInk.com . Details will be presented to the club at a future meeting. There is still flexibility in the design. We will use official brand logos from Rotary Central. Feel free to contact Kim after the presentation if you have any input. We will do this soon if there is an interest so that the shirts (or whatever we decide to order) arrive before I leave the club at the end of May.

Yours in Rotary,
