Aren't we lucky to live in one of the prettiest places on Earth? Happy New Year, Highlands Ranchers!

The Wheel Spinner received this photo from a member (Elizabeth, we believe)  who traveled to Palm Springs and visited with Jan and Jerry Selinfreund. Jerry continues to heal following his surgery in December.

Meeting Notes from the (Noon Meeting) & Announcements

MEETING NOTES FROM LUNCH AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Thanks to Terre Cone and Kristy Hayzlett for this week's notes while The Wheel Spinner editor was under the weather.

Our greeter last week was Zig Berzins.

Nancy Barton stood in for Kim to offer the Inspiration. Nancy offered a humorous look at the New Year's Resolution, which dates back more than 4,000 years to Babylon. She has decided to read more in 2025 and is beginning by adding Closed Captions to her television! Thanks for setting the bar so high, Nancy! :-)

We welcomed guests this past week including Christine Nagelhout (with Judy Carlson), DG Tamie (who isn't really a guest, but we are always happy to see her), our Italian Exchange Student, Filippo Molinari, and Tom Keyton who joined us from the Sunrise Club. Thanks for stopping in and joining the fun of the White Elephant.

The White Elephant was lively and the gifts were quite... interesting, we were told. We did the exchange as the program, so it was a fun start to the year. Claudia also offered the monthly birthdays and anniversaries for January.

After the program, we got a few reminders from Bill Simmermon of events that are forthcoming.
  • There will be a Pickleball Tournament on 1/25 that is hosted by the Cherry Creek Club and a couple of others.
  • The annual MLK Marade March for Rotarians in Downtown will be on 1/20. For information on both, please contact Bill Simmermon at bsimmermon@blueskyprivatewealth.

Claudia Caves reminded us of the following:
  • IFCS will gather to serve again on 1/15 and is in need of 5-6 volunteers.
  • Eagle Academy is having an event on 1/21 and also needs 5-6 volunteers. You may contact Claudia Caves for information on these events. cjcaves123@gmail.com

Please be at Mountain Vista High School by 9:30 am on Saturday. There will be pizza and we will have a live Zoom call with The Ukraine. Special thanks to our friend, Andy Lenec, and DG Tamie Fennel for bringing this to us, and extra thanks especially to Terre Cone, Zig Berzins, and Jeannie Taylor, our initial Angel Investor for making this possible. Kim DeCoste is actively working to engage Highlands Ranch High School and with Andy and others in the Ukraine to identify a Sister Club for us. More to follow when appropriate. We appreciate the club's support of this effort..
  • President Arthur's let us know our speaker Thursday will be Kyle Enders, CEO of We Don't Waste. We will also get to hear from Bill Simmermon about his trip with Project CURE to Africa.

Family of Rotary:
There are not enough words for us to offer our dear Mary Kay Hasz on the passing of her beloved husband, Earl. Earl was a vibrant, kind, generous Rotarian for a number of years with The Rotary Club of Denver Southeast and is known to Rotarians all over District 5450 for the work and time he and Mary Kay offered to Rotary for more than 30 years.

Mary Kay will share details of Earl's Celebration of Life when they are available. Our loving thoughts are with her and with their family. Earl will be missed by many.

 COMMITTEE ANNOUNCEMENTS

FROM THE PAST WEEK & THE MEETINGS

Sunrise Meetings Group Update
Apologies are owed to the Sunrise Club who meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at HRCA Eastridge Recreation Center. Colette Hepp has sent a few updates that got "lost in the shuffle" in recent months. We will do a better job of keeping Sunrise Club activities here in the WS.

From their meeting on 12/18, we have the following notes:

  • Win Pendleton presented on the fascinating history of Black Holes and what we know of deep space. (Did you know Win was an esteemed Professor in his professional life?!)
  • John Zwak was also at the meeting and may be joining one of our clubs.
  • We learned that Mike Runyon has had to withdraw due to a change with work and schedule conflicts.
  • Bill Medlicott still has Rotary Piggy Banks you may request for your spare change. Funds will help with the Backpack Society effort the Sunrise Group is championing. Please reach out to Bill if you would like a piggy bank: bmedlicott2@gmail.com
  • The group will soon turn its focus to the Recycle Event planning in May.
  • They met on 1/8 for breakfast at LTGC. (Notes to follow.)
  • The next meeting is scheduled for 1/22 at Eastridge. Please stop in if you have not been in a while or have never been.

Flyin' B Meeting Update

From the last meeting, we have the following notes:

  • Reminder that we meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 4-5pm in the Longs Ridge Classroom. We often gather after the meeting for a "Dutch" dinner at The Windows Restaurant.

  • Nominations for Club Officers begin now for the changing of the guard on 7/1. If you nominate someone else, please ask their permission and you may nominate yourself. All are welcome who are interested.

  • At the next meeting we will introduce our newest members.

  • The Apple will be passed at the next meeting also to kick off a new year.

  • We will further discussed memorializing Mike Oldham. We are considering additional funds to be added to the $8,000 WC Student Server Scholarship Funds.

The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch

A short note from Kim regarding The Wheel Spinner.

Some of you have heard, but Paul and I have decided to move this year to join our son in Maryland. He is fully employed and in Graduate School and his girlfriend plans to attend Columbia Law in 2026, so we think he is staying East.

We hope to retire to Bethany Beach, Delaware, but as Paul is ready to move on from his life in Corporate Finance, it is time for us to find a new start while we still have the get up and go to do so.

We have set our eyes on the summer for the move. But the schedule is still in flux.

Therefore, it is important that we get someone to train on how to do The Wheel Spinner I know you all think it's a huge task and difficult but it does not have to be. I can help bring the next editor up to speed and leave easy how-to instructions when it is time. I just wanted to let you all know myself.

Our company was founded and has been based in Centennial since 2007, and it is not moving. I am adding travel to our services so that I can move around the world more easily and offer programs, coaching, and training, and I will be happy to help others who plan to travel or who need my core services of communication, writing, public speaking, and career transition assistance.

The Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch will always be a "home" to me and I will be back often, I promise.

Happy New Year, friends. You are a very special group.

Yours in Rotary,

~Kim DeCoste, Editor
