CLUB NEWS
LAST WEEK
By Mickie Cameron
Our speaker Virginia Ortiz director of development and communities, Joshua Station, shared all the amazing things Mile High Ministries does in support of community.
Joshua Station empowers motivated families to overcome homelessness by providing supportive housing in safe and caring community. Justice and Mercy Legal Aid Clinic provides legal services to those struggling with poverty and oppression.  Many in our club will be attending their fundraiser 12th annual spring theatre production “Fences” April 19th.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Renee’ Brodas  4.0 student of the month from Thunder Ridge HS.  Looking to go to college at Vanderbilt or Knox.  For the past 3 years she has been volunteering to care for children with special needs.  Night Lights provides respite care for families with handicapped children.

Scott Friedman, author, Celebration Day.  Scott shows you how to understand the power of celebration at work and in life. By turning on your GPS (Gratitude, Play, and Surprise), you will engage employees which will lead to greater productivity and team performance. Use this book as a resource to bring more joy, spontaneity, fun, and playfulness to your workplace. Get ready to create a happier, healthier workplace as you Celebrate all that is good!

HONORING A DEAR FRIEND OF THE CLUB - KARLA OLSON
Dear Rotary Friends,
Thursday was a magical and monumental day for me. I have never before received such an honor. I so much enjoy my work with energetic youth, dedicated educators, inspiring Rotarians and many crucial service organizations. It continues to be a privilege, and is most certainly my "happy place". Please know that your kind words and support mean the world to me, allowing me to do what I love. I look forward to each and every opportunity to be with you, and I am blessed to call you my friends.

                                                           Sincerely,
                                                           Karla Olson

THE RETIREMENT OF AN AMERICAN FLAG

By Connie Golas

When a flag is no longer in good condition, worn, torn & dirty, there is a specific requirement to dispose of it with honor & respect. Warrior Bonfire Program always retires an American flag at the end of their recreational therapy program for Purple Heart recipients. They recognize & honor fallen comrades during the ceremony. These photos were taken at the fundraiser,  CO Gives a Damn. I offered my father’s burial flag for the ceremony since it was now in poor condition.

Connie comes from a long line of warriors & veterans:
Dad: Ted Louis Golas, served in Army Air Corps in WWII
Mom: US Marine
Sister: Gerry Mc Euen, Women’s Army Corps
Me: Army Nurse Corps
The tall gentleman in our group is Mike McEuen, my brother in law.
The fellow in white was our chef for the event, David Guzman, a Purple Heart recipient from Mission, TX.

During CO Gives a Damn, we had a fun competition to create a “gourmet “ meal out of MREs, the soldier ‘s “ready to eat” meal when in the field. Tim Sparks & Jerry Selenfreund were two of the 4 judges who had to taste test each team’s creation. I’m glad I missed that opportunity!

Mike Foss did an excellent job as MC and advocate for the 3 veterans support programs that night: Warrior Bonfire, the Assn of the US Army & Valor Bridge which prepares soldiers to reenter civilian life with resume building, interview skills, etc.
