LAST WEEK - Phil Calderbank, IB Course (International Business Studies Course) Costa Rica
Phil updated us on their (Jerry, Marion, and Phil's) trip to Costa Rica the end of April. This service mission is to help improve literacy and thereby encourage a greater level of education eventually leading to a reduction in poverty. Only 3% of the population may be considered financially comfortable; the rest of the 4 .1 million people are poor and grateful for anything that we can do. 60% of children drop out of school in the 7th grade to work on the family farm. This mission began after partnering with Carl Dickerson and "Give a book" (now 2395 books delivered!). The group also teamed with the Peace Corp while in CR who remains active there. Their objective was two-fold: 1) to teach the Foundation in International Business Studies course (IB Course) to 7th grade IB students. They have been asked to teach the course in all of the 21 Costa Rica IB schools and are now preparing to go back October 14-22. Our job is not finished! The course is now under consideration for use across the Denver Metro IB schools and may be used as a part of the Youth 'World Affairs Challenge' exposing more kids to Rotary. 2) Return to the Sue Fox Memorial Library in Monterrey where Jerry gave a speech to town's officials (a town with no access to books) as well as leaving their hand prints on the wall. Contact Marion or Elizabeth if you are interested in continuing to supply wheel chairs in CR.

HIPS (Hide in Plain Site) needs our help, the females in the Club's help
Previously, Joe described their new mentoring program, an opportunity to be a sounding board, open channel of communication, and positive influence for students in HIPS (remember, a student could be 16 to 60). Their goal is to match same sex students with mentors. Currently there are too many male mentors; a waiting list is active. There are not enough female mentors; if interested, please see their website, www.hideplainsite.org (use the "Contact Us" tab to inquire and will be directed to the Mentoring Program Director).
